While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. That’s why they are so popular.Macallan Gold Double Cask Limited Edition Speyside is located in Northeastern, Scotland and its single malts are highly regarded due to its creamy and smooth character with no trace of smoke making them easy to drink. The Macallan is regarded as Speyside top-distiller. Being legal does not mean its right and I find a hard time taking seriously whiskies that add artificial colorants. Macallan is also one of the few distilleries that refrains from using colorants in the whisky. This practice is allowed by the United Kingdom’s Scotch Whisky Regulations and is practically the norm in the industry. The good news is that drams are incredibly good so you can’t go wrong with whichever you choose. The Double Cask is a better choice for those folks like me that prefer deeper oaky notes and a bit of warmth at the end.The Sherry Oak offers rich sweetness that will please most consumers. Differences between the Macallan Double Cask and Sherry Cask I do not agree with such statement but you get the idea of how good this whisky is. This whisky is described by F Paul Pacult, the renowned international whisky writer, as ‘simply the best 12 Year Old single malt around’. So if you are new to whisky or are fond of sweet drams you are more likely to enjoy the Sherry Oak over the Double Cask. The Sherry Oak is a more approachable whisky as its flavor profile is easier to please most people due to the strong caramel notes. This is the sweet version of the Macallan 12 Double Cask and more appealing to most consumers due to the strong sherry wine note. The Macallan Sherry Oak is a nice and mellow dram and with a super smooth mouthfeel with no harshness whatsoever and a pleasing lingering sweet burn making a great sip.
